The San Francisco 49ers were considered favorites to win the Super Bowl for a while, but their championship hopes took a big hit on Monday when the Baltimore Ravens beat them 33-19. It was a terrible night for quarterback Brock Purdy, the former MVP front-runner, as he threw four interceptions and zero passes as the 49ers struggled to keep Ravens QB Lamar Jackson from making big plays in crucial moments.
To shore up their defense a bit, San Francisco signed defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day over Jason McCourty and Dov Kleiman on Tuesday. A sixth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2018 after five seasons at Rutgers University in New Jersey, Joseph-Day was inactive his entire rookie season as the Rams reached the Super Bowl but lost to Tom Brady. and the New England Patriots.
But he became the starter the following year and, despite suffering a torn pectoral muscle during the 2021 season, returned to the Super Bowl where L.A. beat the cincinnati bengals to win it all. Joseph-Day spent this season and last season with the Los Angeles Chargers and had 3.0 sacks and 11 quarterback sacks in 14 games this year before being cut by the struggling Chargers last week.
The Niners seem to have picked up on defense this year, trading for former defensive tackle Chase Young two months ago and also acquiring Randy Gregory from the Denver Broncos earlier in February. They also signed defensive end Javon Hargrave in the offseason, who has 7.0 sacks, 14 QB hits and eight tackles for loss in 14 games this year.
