49ers Confront Adversity: Can They Overcome the Odds?

 

Colin Kaepernick was 16-of-34 passing for 143 yards with one touchdown, one interception and a 56.4 quarterback rating in a Week 7 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.andquot;I have to be better, Kaepernick said after the San Francisco 49ers lost their sixth straight game, 34-17.

I think we threw about 100 yards. That and not winning in the NFL. We have to be able to do better at that and ultimately we have to put it together as a team and play well as a team for 60 minutes to get wins.andquot;Kaepernick was sacked four times and rushed for 84 yards on nine carries.San Francisco took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Kaepernick led the offense with a five-play, 75-yard touchdown catch. After a Tampa Bay turnover, Kaepernick threw a 17-yard pass for the game score.

We did very well the first run, said the quarterback. andquot;We got into a rhythm. Everything clicked for us. We got it first, first down and rolling. We made good plays.andquot;And after that?andquot;We just went out of sync,andquot; said the quarterback.

Again, it was a situation where we got into a rhythm early in the game and lost it and we didn’t execute as well as we did later in the game, and that and#039; We’ve got to be able to do a better job of going the full 60 minutes and stringing all those plays together.

The 49ers gained 20 first downs and were 6 of 15 on third downs. The unit finished the game with 273 yards.Kaepernick said the team’s consistency wasn’t good enough to win.

On our two touchdown drives, players made plays down the field and we have to be able to do that consistently throughout the game because defenses are talented,andquot; Kaepernick said. andquot;Things are going to be close and we have to be able to make those plays and that and that will be the difference in those games at the end.andquot;San Francisco enters the holiday weekend in last place in the NFC West.

The 49ers are back in action in November. 6 against the New Orleans Saints.andquot;We must be able to overcome difficulties, Kaepernick said. In games, things often don’t go your way. Bad games happen, things like that, but you have to be strong enough mentally to say, and#039;You know what? It’s a bad play, but we’ll get back to that. Weand comes back to play and that is the difference in the game.

And it beats the bad game that happened before.and#039;andquot;This is the first time Kaepernick has gone 1-6 in his six-year career.

The 49ers haven’t gone 1-6 since 2010.andquot;That’s not the position we want to be in,andquot; said the signal caller. andquot;We work hard every week, we prepare, we know everything, but we have to come out and do better. Where our record is right now, we’re in for a good week. We can make some improvements, get some people healthy, come back and try for a home run.andquot;.
