Dirtbags’ Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short Against Michigan
Long Beach State’s baseball team mounted a spirited comeback in the ninth inning, but ultimately fell short against the visiting Michigan Wolverines, losing 7-6 in a thrilling contest.
The Dirtbags, trailing 7-3 entering the final frame, refused to go quietly. With one out, second baseman Riki DeSa singled to center field, sparking a rally that would bring the home crowd to its feet.
Designated hitter Ethan Clough followed with a walk, and catcher Chris Jimenez delivered a run-scoring single to left, trimming the deficit to 7-4. Shortstop Jonathan Long then worked a bases-loaded walk, forcing in another run and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
However, Michigan reliever Will Proctor regained his composure, striking out pinch-hitter Aidan Malm to end the threat and secure the save. The Wolverines’ victory marked their second win in the three-game series, with the rubber match set for Sunday.
“We battled hard, but we just couldn’t quite get over the hump,” said Dirtbags head coach Eric Valenzuela. “I’m proud of our guys for fighting until the very end, but we need to find ways to close out games like this.”
Michigan starter David Lally Jr. earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.1 innings. The Wolverines’ offense was paced by designated hitter Mitch Voit, who launched a two-run homer in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie.
The loss dropped Long Beach State to 10-12 on the season, while Michigan improved to 15-7. The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday, with the Dirtbags seeking to salvage a win against their Big Ten foes.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Valenzuela remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. “We’re getting closer, and I like the fight I’m seeing from our guys,” he said. “We just need to keep working and believe in ourselves.”
The Dirtbags will look to regroup and rebound on Sunday, as they aim to avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Wolverines.
