The San Francisco 49ers are enjoying success with an 11-3 record. They clinched the NFC West and currently lead the conference and the #1 seed. The Niners have two players in our 2023 NFL MVP power rankings after a 45-29 win over the 3-11 Arizona Cardinals. Of course, Brock Purdy is in charge. Here’s a look at why San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy leads the 2023 NFL MVP power rankings ahead of the rest of the field.
1. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
In the context of the 2023 NFL MVP race, it’s undeniable that Purdy has emerged as a huge front-runner. His outstanding leadership and contributions on the field were 49ersand#039; an impressive season. On the other hand, it’s important to understand that other players also deserve serious MVP consideration. Still, Purdy seems to have it all — the win-loss record, the individual numbers and the story.
2. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys
Despite his recent stumble against the Bills, Dak Prescott is still a force to be reckoned with. He rose to MVP level as the season progressed. With four losses, Prescott’s overall efficiency is impressive. That’s even less than Sunday’s ideal of 3.9 yards per attempt. In Week 15, he ranks 2nd in total QBR. He also leads the league in passing touchdowns and is fifth in passing yards. Of course, Prescott may not have the same dynamic talent as Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen. However, his leadership has taken his team forward this season. If he finishes the season on a high, the MVP title could be within his reach.
3. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
Lamar Jackson remains a consistent standout. He led the Baltimore Ravens to an impressive 11-3 record. As such, he makes a compelling case for league MVP. While Jacksonand’s passing numbers may not match Purdyan’s, his extraordinary lack of urgency adds another dimension to his candidacy. Ravensand#039; a recent win against the Jaguars secured them first place in the AFC (for now). It also set the stage for Jackson to earn MVP honors. Meeting the 49ers in San Francisco (Week 16) gives Jackson a great opportunity to beat Purdy and improve his MVP odds.
4. Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers
Like Purdy, Christian McCaffrey emerged as a key contributor to the 49ersand#039; success This increased his presence in the MVP conversation. McCaffrey leads the league in rushing yards entering the 2023 season and has a chance to pull off a rare feat. He was able to become the first player in 28 years, and only the fourth since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, to lead the NFL in rushing yards each week of the season. There are three players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who have accomplished this feat. They also captured the MVP award in two of the four seasons in which they accomplished the remarkable feat.
