Dallas Cowboy Star player and Wife Joyfully Welcome Newest Team Member into their Family!
DeMarcus Lawrence remembers getting the call.
“I’m going to the hospital,” his fiancée, Sasha Almeida, told him. “My water broke.”
Lawrence had just flown to Dallas for his rookie minicamp, days after the Cowboys traded up to draft him 34th overall in 2014. Almeida had prayed through Lawrence’s draft weekend that she wouldn’t go into labor. She flew to Vegas for his draft party while nine months pregnant, against doctor’s orders.
Now here 22-year-old Lawrence was, unable to catch a flight to Boise in time. He watched his first son’s birth over FaceTime from his hotel room at the Gaylord, 1,600 miles away.
“It’s hard, emotional,” Lawrence told SportsDay from OTAs last week. “Like, damn, I’m missing my [first son’s] birth.
“I’m still trying to make up for it.”
The Cowboys’ 2018 roster went young this offseason: 87 players on their 90-man squad are under 30 years old. Still, Lawrence is one of more than a dozen Cowboys who will celebrate Father’s Day as a dad on Sunday. And he’s not the only one who thinks back to draft weekend each year when Father’s Day comes around. Tight end Rico Gathers remembers the overlap vividly. Two more rookies joined that club this year.
