Howell’s Possible Return as Starter Looms for Chiefs vs. 49ers
The Washington Chiefs benched Sam Howell this week after some rocky performances after veteran Jacoby Brissett was named the starter. But Howell could soon be thrust back into a starting role this week against the San Francisco 49ers.
In a strange twist, Brissett revealed that he has a hamstring strain and is now in the running against the 49ers. If he can’t leave, Howell takes over. After being benched, head coach Ron Rivera is concerned about Howelland’s mentality and a possible return to a starting role; will he start against san francisco? “Samand#039; played enough football this year to be in those meetings, getting the game plan and he looked good taking reps, Rivera said. He did, he really did.
” Brissett now has a question mark at the Week 17 position, so he and Howell have split reps in practice. After a bad month, Howell got the season and final two games off to watch Brissett’s offense and learn from what he saw. Now that Brissett is uncertain, Rivera said he will be monitored for the next few days, and if Jacoby can’t go, Howell will start.
“I mean I’d go with Sam and quot; Rivera said if Brissett can’t go on Sunday. andquot; There’s nothing we can do about it. I mean, he took some reps today, looked pretty good, still moving, but when it’s tight and the last thing you want is for that to happen during a game. So we have to be smart about it. Weand will contact them within the next 48 hours.
” Football is a funny thing, and just days after it was said Brissett would be benched, Howell could very well start his 16th game of the season. At 4-11, the Chiefs need something going in these final two games to take positives from a bad season.
