Injury Woes Continue for 49ers as Star Quarterback Sidelined Indefinitely

 

The San Francisco 49ers season-long streak of quarterback injuries continued Sunday in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.Rookie Brock Purdy left the first quarter game with a right elbow injury, but had to return in the second half when linebacker Josh Johnson exited with a possible head injury.According to the 49ers, Purdy’s reinstatement was questionable.

Johnson was pushed to the turf and his head hit the ground hard, putting Purdy back on the court just four minutes into the third quarter. He left the game before the 49ers punted.Johnson, 36, who has made just nine career starts, was evaluated for a possible head injury after completing 7 of 13 passes for 74 yards (no TDs or interceptions) and a sack.

He then returned to the sideline and was replaced by Johnson.Johnson, a fifth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2008 NFL draft, was signed to the 49ers’ practice squad on Dec. 6, two days after Garoppolo broke his left foot. He only threw 355 passes in his career.

He has a 1-8 record as a starter and has seen action in 39 games with seven different teams.In the regular season, Johnson completed one of two 10-yard passes against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14.Purdy, a freshman at Iowa State, is a Rookie of the Year finalist and is off to a 7-0 start.

He took over for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, who became San Francisco’s starting quarterback again after Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2..
