Joel Embiid Injury Casts Uncertainty on 76ers’ Season Fate
Much to the dismay of Philadelphia 76ers fans, Joel Embiid left the team’s last game against the Golden State Warriors late after suffering an embarrassing foot injury. Chasing a loose ball, Jonathan Kuminga fell and landed squarely on his left knee, prompting the reigning MVP to immediately scream in pain.
Not only did the 76ers not lose their third game streak that put them in fourth place in the East, they will likely miss Embiid for a while because of this latest development. He was already clearly not healthy for this outing, and while an MRI has yet to be done to determine the extent of his injury, there’s no denying that the team needs to be very careful going forward. How will the 76ers deal with the aftermath of Joel Embiid’s injury? In the meantime, Philadelphia will have to make do with what they currently have in their deck.
Paul Reed and Mo Bamba’s workload should increase significantly, although their inconsistent play this season could force the front office to look for proven outside help before the trade deadline. The Sixers’ schedule doesn’t get any easier from here, and Embiid’s lack of significant time could threaten their place in the standings, especially if Tyrese Maxey is also sidelined with a nagging injury.
New York already clinched them last night, and considering they face Cleveland (twice), Miami, New York, Milwaukee and Boston in February, it could be the deciding factor for them this season. Embiid is too important to the 76ers on both ends as the organization’s leading scorer and one of the best defensive anchors.
However, the team has a variety of true scoring threats that should be enough to fill the void with increased volume, though they may struggle defensively because Embiid’s presence and physicality simply cannot be replaced.Hopefully the Philadelphia 76ers can stay afloat while waiting for their best player. Stay tuned for more updates on Joel Embiid’s injury..
