McCaffrey Out for 49ers’ Finale, Expected Back for Playoffs
The 49ers got good news and bad news about Christian McCaffrey on Monday. The bad news is that he took a mild calf strain against Commander on Sunday and will miss the 49ers and 039; in the regular season finale against the Rams. The good news is that he is almost certainly ready 49ersand#039; after the first round of the playoffs. andquot;Weand#039;re very sure of that head coach Kyle Shanahan said in a conference call.
That was good news. It could have been a lot worse. We are happy to take care of him this week. Hopefully heand#039;ll work in the off week.andquot; McCaffrey finishes the regular season with 272 passing yards, 1,459 passing yards, 14 passing yards, 67 receiving touchdowns, 564 receiving yards and 7 touchdown catches. One of the best seasons by a 49ers quarterback.
With the head out, the 49ers will face Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason, both quality defensive players. Mitchell replaced McCaffrey last Sunday against the Commanders after McCaffrey strained his calf and finished with 80 rushing yards and 17 carries. He was great.
Mitchell starts healthy on many NFL teams. He even started 11 games for the 49ers and has an impressive career average of 4.7 yards per carry. He’s been injured for most of the last two seasons, but his knee finally looks healthy (touches). Mason, meanwhile, is healthy and fresh, averaging 5.0 yards per carry this season. It will be interesting to see how the offense performs without McCaffrey for a week. I think the offense is working pretty well.
