NFC Playoff Battle: Lions, 49ers, Eagles in Tight Race with Dallas Chasing

With two games remaining in the 2023 regular season, the Detroit Lions are tied for the best record in the NFC. The three teams, including the Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles, own 11-4 records through 15 games.

Currently, the 49ers hold the winning streak based on record against NFC opponents. The 49ers went 11-4 in a 33-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.

As a result, the competition for the top spot is even for Week 17. The Dallas Cowboys are still not out of contention, sitting just one game behind the top three with a 10-5 record. The Week 17 matchup between Detroit and Dallas is huge in the playoffs, as the Lions could take the top spot with a win and a loss against the Eagles and 49ers on Sunday. Meanwhile, Dallas is a game behind Philadelphia for the NFC East lead and a win against Detroit. should overcome Eagles pressure.

There is still a way to the top of the lions, but it requires help. A win would guarantee the best chance, and both the 49ers and Eagles would have to drop one of their last two games.

In Week 17, the 49ers are in first place in the NFC, with the Eagles in second and the Lions in third. NFC South leaders Tampa Bay finishes fourth in the division. Wild cards belong to Dallas, Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks.

Detroit can’t finish lower than third. If the Lions secure the No. 2 seed, Dan Campbelland’s team could host its second playoff game at Ford Field if it defeats its first-round playoff opponent.
