“Peter King’s Farewell Highlights Steelers’ Cam Heyward and Charlie Batch Legacy”
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most respected franchises in NFL history, and two players got a shout-out in the final column from one of the most respected writers in the history of sports journalism.
Those players were Cam Heyward and Charlie Batch. For the last time, fans can read Peter King’s Football Morning in America column that shaped generations of football fans. Now he says goodbye, puts down the keyboard and announces his retirement with one last song. “Who cares? not me I am the luckiest man on earth.
I am forever grateful that I have been a long-term entrepreneur in an increasingly short-term business, writing this column for 27 years and being a sports journalist for 44 years. Really, I enjoyed everything,” King wrote. In his latest story, King praised Heyward and Batch, labeling both players as “Mr. Nice Guys” list of the best players he played with in his career. “His work with the poor in tough areas of Pittsburgh is inspiring.
A book needs to be written about how players, even non-superstars, can make an impact in their hometown,” King wrote of Batch. “Genuine and thoughtful while still being a beast between the lines. He gave a free suit to all 11 male students at a Pittsburgh high school — many underprivileged kids — during their high school years,” he wrote of Heyward at the time..
