Playoff Pressure: 49ers’ Brock Purdy Faces Crucial Test in Postseason
The San Francisco 49ers will have to wait another week to miss Super Wild Card Weekend as they finished first in the NFC and earned a first-round bye.
They earned that right by being arguably the most talented team in the entire NFL, let alone Super Bowl winners. But even the best teams like the 49ers aren’t perfect, because if you dig deep enough, you can always find mistakes.
Since 2011, the 49ers have reached the NFC Championship Game or better in each of their last six NFL playoff appearances.
Two of them earned Super Bowl appearances but fell short of the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the game and number 039; Since Kyle Shanahan agreed to become the new head coach of the 49ers in 2017, he has led San Francisco to the playoffs three times, but found himself failing in the big games.
Twice it was the conference championship game, the other being the Super Bowl.49ers fans can’t help but believe in this year and this team, especially one as talented as it is from top to bottom, position to position. But they also saw how talented this team was in the past and it fell short of expectations. Granted, some of that is due to injuries, where no matter how talented the team was, too many of them ruined their chances for playoff success.
That doesn’t appear to be the case this year, as the 49ers are mostly healthy, or at least healthier than last year.If the 49ers (12-5) can avoid key injuries and Shanahan stops fumbling in key plays, the 49ers have a chance to return to the Super Bowl.
However, there is still one component that is still associated with Shanahan that can still criticize him, and that is his starting quarterback, Brock Purdy. It’s clear that Purdy is doing everything he can to prove himself worthy of a starting quarterback to lead the 49ers, let alone one of the NFL’s best.
Holding the title of Mr. Irrelevant, the last pick of each year’s #039;draft, puts a huge chip on your shoulder. So he hears critics and their mouths, as the reason he and 49ersand#039; success comes not from his own ability, but from the ability around him, even the head coach who is supposed to make it easy for him.
At the same time, Heand is a soccer player.Trying too hard to prove a point can make a 24 year old worry and make mistakes. It’s at least somewhat true that Purdy doesn’t have to do too much, and at least his defense is definitely helping him.
According to Fox Sports Stats, the 49ers have the NFL’s third-highest scoring defense, averaging 17.5 points per game. With a good defense, Purdy doesn’t often play from behind because usually the opponent has to play that way and focus on passing the ball to get quick points and stay in the game.It was the regular season; it’s the playoffs where everything changes.
As good as the 49ers are, they could easily find themselves playing from behind and that would push the ball down the field.
Then it turns out that Purdy is upset.49ersand#039; With 12 wins this season, they are undefeated in SI, except for shutouts. However, in four of their five losses (and that’s not counting the regular-season loss to the Los Angeles Rams that sat most of the starters), they lost a game.
And in three of those four, Purdy has thrown at least two interceptions, with the game against the Baltimore Ravens being his worst of the four.Isn’t avoiding mistakes, especially turnovers, the key to winning in the playoffs? Get traded in the regular season and usually in it and hope for another game later, but make it one in a win or go home atmosphere and it could be one of your last games.
Shanahan can only write so much to protect Purdy. His playmakers can only make so many plays. Purdy needs to protect the ball and trust the playmakers and his decisions..
