Purdy Eyes Redemption: 49ers QB Aims for Comeback Against Washington
The San Francisco 49ers will look to bounce back against the Washington Commander this weekend after a tough Monday Night Football loss to the Baltimore Ravens. With the 49ers struggling on both sides of the ball, it was a particularly tough game for quarterback Brock Purdy, who threw his first four interceptions before leaving the game with concussions.
The 49ers were held to eight possessions and ended up losing by 14 points in a game that appeared to end early in the third quarter when it was a mix of big plays and bad decisions. What was the problem with Purdy and the 49ers on offense? “I feel like our game plan was good for what we wanted to accomplish,” Purdy said. “It was just the execution part that I feel like I didn’t do a good enough job of. I think our mentality and everything about it was good, but I couldn’t execute it.
“So when we watched the film and stuff, our plays were there, the plays had to be made. We felt good when we went through the film and moved on. We were there and we had everything I think was pretty good. It it just didn’t work out well.
So yeah, if we see them again on the road, of course we’d be happy to play them and everything, but we’ll take it one day at a time and see how everything goes.” If both teams qualify, the 49ers could see a Super Bowl rematch against the Ravens, but the team has a long process to reach that goal. One of those steps? Brock Purdy learns to use the finer lines of aggression and also be football smart.
“Obviously in the games I’ve played, it’s been on a tear, which is a tight window or a tight contest, but at the same time being in a smart situation with the ball where the play is all over the place,” Purdy said. . Now, after nearly a full season and a half as a starter, Purdy has begun to learn the difference, and Monday’s loss was a good learning curve for that. “So I’ve played enough games myself that I think I understand when and where I can be aggressive and take a risk, take a shot and when I should go ahead, check it, throw it away, things like that.” Purdy said. “Like I said, it’s a situational thing and football is a situational game.
This is where I have to grow and continue to bank on what I’ve been through. But when you’re a quarterback in the NFL, you’ve got to be able to take chances, take chances and take the right windows at the time. That’s what I’m learning now.” While many of the interceptions were subjective as to who ultimately got the blame, Purdy took responsibility for the first decision, admitting that he crossed the line by being too aggressive. “Yeah, we had two really explosive plays on that drive, a third down and then the next play after that to [TE] George [Kittle] again,” Purdy said as he broke up the drive.
“So it’s kind of a feeling, everything comes together, we feel good, and then we call the play that wasn’t the right coverage. So for me, it’s like, “Okay, dude, go check it out.” At that time I was aggressive with myself. I thought, “Okay, I’ve only had two big games, I’ll try to make up for it.” Which probably in hindsight wasn’t the right decision, it wasn’t a smart play as a quarterback.
” “It’s something I’ve got to grow into because you make big plays and stuff, but every play has a life. Now, whatever the play is next, you’ve got to play the play right, not just feed off the emotions. and all that you felt from the previous plays. . It’s something I had to learn the hard way.
” Now in Week 17, the Commanders will face Purdy as they hope to take the learning onto the field as the 49ers try to regain the top seed in the NFC before the playoffs. But by taking responsibility and sharing a genuine reflection on his performance this Monday, Purdy will put Monday night’s four-stop game behind him and try to prove himself once again.
