Purdy’s Four Interceptions Raise Concerns for 49ers
Brock Purdy went from MVP favorite to 49ers concern in three quarters. Purdy threw four interceptions in a 33–19 loss to the Ravens on Christmas Eve, leaving the game with his second pin in as many weeks. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan was optimistic the injury won’t force Purdy to miss as the 11-4 49ers try to stay in the NFC. “He hung in there, kept fighting,” Shanahan told reporters after the game.
“In the second half, our whole team struggled, so it wasn’t just him. “I know he was disappointed he couldn’t finish it, but because of that jab, I just wanted to keep him away. He’s ready to come back next week.” Purdy was replaced in the fourth quarter by Sam Darnold, who threw a touchdown pass when San Francisco tried in vain late.
“This is the NFL,” Purdy said. “We have opportunities coming and we have two games left in the regular season before we get to the playoffs. For me, [I’m] trying to look at the big picture of what we’re trying to do, what our goals are as a team. But at the same time I have to look in the mirror and ask myself why or how did this happen and why did I make these decisions? “Our team was ready to play and for me to make those decisions is not fair to these guys.
I have to understand that and understand that and I have to make my team better. Purdy, the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, expertly led Shanahan’s offense with dangerous weapons in Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuki.
The question all season has been how much credit Purdy deserves for the talent around him. The 23-year-old’s 49ers were on the move on their first drive of the game, but he was picked off in the end zone by safety Kyle Hamilton. Shanahan called the interception one of the “big mistakes” of the night, but it was far from Purdy’s only mistake.
He was intercepted on two of his next three possessions and was under constant pressure from a swarming Ravens defense. “I have to ask myself, ‘Okay, who are you?’ and #039;” Purdy said. “”What do you represent? Who are you when things are going well? Who are you when things don’t go your way? It’s easy to ride high and think you’re the guy when things are going well, winning games and all.
And some games you don’t really see a lot of adversity and stuff, and that’s the reality of the NFL. – Of course I have to look in the mirror, look at the games that are ready to improve, make cleaner decisions, help my team collect points, win and defend the ball.
And if things don’t go my way, he understands that I can’t act. I have to be real with myself and be better, but I want to be the same guy every day. I want to be consistent in what I do and how I do things; whether things go well or not, I know who I am and I’m not going to waver from that.
” The 49ers, who close the season against the Commanders and Rams, are tied for first place in the NFC with the Eagles and Lions, but currently own a playoff spot. Lamar Jackson, who threw two touchdown passes in an impressive performance, has emerged as the MVP favorite and the Ravens have the best record in football at 12-3.
