Referee Trip Fuels ’49ers Curse’ Speculation for Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson got a tough break in the Baltimore Ravens’ game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday when a referee tripped him in the end zone, but opponents could tell you it saved the quarterback’s season.

Jackson was trying to avoid a fumble on Baltimore’s second drive when he tripped over a referee in the end zone. He then tried to throw the ball away, but the pass did not make it back to the starting line. Jackson was called for an intentional grounding in the end zone, a safety. In the long run the play didn’t matter.

The Ravens dominated San Francisco to a 33-19 victory. However, one wild theory circulating on TikTok has raised the question of whether the trip will make Jackson immune to the “49ers curse.” What is the “curse of the 49ers” you ask? Before Week 16, the 49ers had lost three games this year.

All three teams that beat San Francisco—the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals—later lost their season openers. But wait, there’s more. The Niners scored exactly 17 points in each game. Without the safety, it’s possible the 49ers could have scored 17 in the loss against Baltimore.

You can probably see where this is going now, but here’s the video that went viral: Deshaun Watson, Kirk Cousins and Joe Burrow all suffered season-ending injuries when their teams beat the 49ers. Ravens fans who believe in the curse are now hoping it’s directly related to San Francisco’s 17-point lead. If so, Jackson should be safe.
