If the Philadelphia Eagles take over the NFC East while their defense continues to struggle, heads could soon turn and the unit will receive a complete overhaul in 2024. With the Eagles having outstanding success in 2022, reaching and nearly winning the Super Bowl, it should come as no surprise that other teams wanted a piece of that magic. In the offseason, two of their head coaches were kept under wraps as offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon began head coaching jobs with other teams.
It’s never easy to replace the coordinators who succeeded Steichen and Gannon, but 2023 head coach Nick Sirianni seemed confident in new offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and his defensive counterpart Sean Desai. Through the first 11 weeks of the season, it looked like both men could fill the roles adequately. However, things have changed quickly as they have lost four of their last five and dominate the NFC East. In addition, the defense — which was a strength last season — was frustratingly bad at times in 2023, and it cost Desai his starting role in Week 13. Now, home playoffs are no longer a guarantee of reaching Week 18, and Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer believes that if they lose the division and don’t make the playoffs, the Eagles’ defense will get a complete overhaul next season. .
