SANTA CLARA – Colin Kaepernick is keeping his starting job after being benched during one of the worst performances of his career.Niners offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said Tuesday that the battlefield quarterback will start when San Francisco? (1-11) hosts the Jets (3-9) on Sunday. In Sunday’s 26-6 loss to the Bears, Kaepernick threw just one pass through three quarters.

Kaepernick was pulled from the game by Blaine Gabbert in the fourth quarter after he had five sacks and one pass breakup that came midway through the second quarter.”We decided during the game to try and see if Blaine could give us a spark and Kap was the starter,” Modkins said. “It’s nothing else.”San Francisco ended up with just six net yards after the weather dictated a heavy reliance on the running game. Gabbert completed 4 of 10 attempts for 35 yards and took the game away.

“I just looked at how the ball came out of (Kaepernick’s) hand and what were our chances to finish it,” 49ers coach Chip Kelly said afterward. But Chicago scored three touchdowns and the 49ers had to pass to get back into the game.It was Kaepernick’s first career game in the snow.
