It was very head scratching to watch. Verrett ended up playing five snaps, but allowed a touchdown in his final game. The decision to play him proved expensive. On Tuesday, Kyle Shanahan explained the 49ersand#039; decided to play Verrett so suddenly against the Ravens.
“That was the plan, just have him run four to eight plays, and quot; Shanahan said. and quot; There’s a lot of different formulas out there. Some guys have certain attributes that we like. We see a lot here in practice and want to know what options we might have for certain packages and such.
So, the game plan is we always put five DBs and we ended up putting Sammy (Womack III) on J.V. We wanted to get him in there, start trying some things. We planned it very short. I know our goal in the game was four against eight. I think he ended up getting five.
So, just some schematic things to know our future possibilities.” It’s smart to want to slowly integrate Verrett into the defense because of his injury history. A full workload would immediately be silly, but so would playing him in the middle of a crucial game.
It would be one thing if the 49ers were leading or doing well against the Ravens, but that clearly wasn’t the case. There is also the arrogance of Shanahan and the 49ers playing Verrett over Thomas, who has played very well since the bye week. The 49ers really thought they could play Verrett at short and be good against the Ravens’ run offense. Well, that decision cost them the landing and the 49ers look like arrogant fools. Maybe next time they’ll consider the state of the game before desperately trying to see if Verrett is still a 2020 player.
